Survey Reviews and Approvals: Guidance for Researchers and Others

If you’re designing or sending out a survey at BYU or for a university purpose, there are some important things to know before you contact survey respondents.

BYU’s recently revised Surveys Policy outlines when a survey requires special approval and who you should contact for help. As you read the policy, you’ll learn about the following:

  • Approval requirements for BYU units, employees, and students who use information provided by the university to contact potential survey respondents or who conduct surveys on behalf of the university.
  • Criteria that guide survey review and approval
  • Surveys for which approval is not required
  • Institutional Review Board approval requirements for academic research surveys that involve human subjects
  • Rules on the use of BYU identity marks (e.g., logos, icons) in surveys

Following the requirements in the policy helps ensure surveys’ statistical integrity, alignment with university goals, respect for time and resources, and compliance with relevant laws.
