Out-of-State Work Policy

Employees who have previously been allowed to work remotely from outside of Utah should be directed to comply fully with a new policy.

The university recently approved the new Out-of-State Work Policy, which requires BYU employees to live in and work primarily in Utah. Remote work outside of Utah is permitted only during isolated, short-term travel. Limited exceptions exist for university assignments, professional development leave, and student employees working between semesters.

Employees who have previously been allowed to work remotely from outside of Utah should be directed to comply fully with this policy.

A list of a few helpful examples is available here.

Understandably during the COVID-19 pandemic, students have in many cases needed to study and work remotely. Supervisors of student employees should strive to comply with this policy as soon as possible, but flexibility for student employees may be warranted during winter semester 2021.

Questions about this policy should be directed to:

  1. Associate Academic Vice President – Faculty,
  2. Manager of Staff and Administrative Employment
  3. Manager of Student Employment
