Campus Security Authorities

In accordance with federal law, 34 C.F.R. § 668.46, BYU designates each of the following individuals on campus as being a campus security authority (CSA):

  1. Any employee or independent contractor of BYU Police or BYU Security.
  2. Any individual who has responsibility for campus security, such as an individual who is responsible for monitoring entrance into institutional property.
  3. Any individual or organization specified in the most recent year’s Annual Security Report as someone to whom students and employees should report criminal offenses.
  4. An official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline, and campus judicial proceedings. (Note: If such an official is a pastoral or professional counselor as defined in 34 C.F.R. § 668.46, the official is not considered a campus security authority when acting as a pastoral or professional counselor.)

Each CSA must complete an eleven-minute training available at BYU Clery Act Campus Security Authority Training.
